Reflection

This year in US History, I have learned about many topics and have learned a lot of the history of our country. I learned that history matters and it is important to learn about the history of our country. In the movie 13 days, I learned that because of the decisions President Kennedy made, our country is still intact and could of been different if some decisions would of been made different. Letter to the future

Dear People of 2216,

The 21st century is full of all kinds of change. Some change for the good and some for the bad. Unfortunately, our time has brought many  new terror organizations around the world. However, change for the better has also happened. For the technology of the world has changed rapidly, and for the better. Technology has allowed us to find new things about our world. It has let us see our climate in a more detailed form. This can be both good and bad. It can be good because it allows us to see what is changing and what we need to do to fix it if we have too. It can be bad though, but only for the general public. It can be bad because it gives the public a realistic view of their world which can scare most of us. As you can see, we need to teach climate to our younger generations to change and be prepared for this problem. But in today’s world, Climate is taught in many different ways in our schools while teachers teach what they want, when they want about climate which needs to be changed.

In our time, The United States is widely recognized as the world leader in climate change research. According to Nasa’s webpage on Climate(1), most climate scientists agree that the main cause of the current global warming in 2016 trend is human expansion of the “Greenhouse Effect” which is the warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space. Gases that contribute to the Greenhouse effect include: water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons. On Earth today, human activities are changing the natural Greenhouse. Over the last century, the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil has increased that concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. So what must we do to teach our generation about the change in the climate?

Today teachers bring all kinds of topics about climate change into the classroom. According to the results of a survey on NPR(2) with 1500 teachers across America. At least one in three teachers(4) bring up climate change denial into the classroom, claiming that many scientists believe climate change is not caused by humans. This goes against most active climate scientists beliefs. More than 97% of climate scientists believe that global warming is caused mainly by human activities. Along with this, the average student receives between 1 to 2 hours of climate change lessons a week according to Climate Access(3). Compare this to the other subjects. In 2016, most students go to school 40 hours a week, which comes out to about 8 hours a day. So imagine only 2 of those 40 hours are spent teaching kids about climate change, which is a crazy statistic.

In an interview with the Randolph Head of School, Jay Rainey, he expressed to us that he believes that having an awareness of our environment is extremely important. He also said something that I personally had never thought of and that was that it is not the earth that is fragile but humans themselves are fragile. People today are more worried about saving a species of animals such as the panda, who are hopefully alive when you're reading this because they are awesome, rather than focusing on the human Race.

Despite all of the good sources on Climate change teachers don’t use them. Many teachers “don’t have time” to find these resources. This is why 3 out 4 teachers are misinformed or unaware of climate change. Only 15% of Americans teachers believe that climate change is caused by humans and only 2% of teachers believe it is happening. Students and younger generations need to know what is going on with climate change. They are the future of the human race. If people don’t know what is wrong or what they need to do it want happen.

In conclusion, if teachers don’t teach themselves about climate change they can’t teach others. Today’s students are the future and need to be educated well so they can impact it. If our students don’t learn the proper aspects of climate change they will not know what to do to fix it and even prevent it in the future. The earth itself is not endangered of dying any time soon, it has another 5 billion years to go. However, humans are what are at risk. Our window of livable conditions is tiny. If it gets below 0 to a certain point we are done, same with anything over 100. As average temperatures rise our window closes and students today need to learn about this and learn to fix it.

What I have learned so far

So far in my research I have learned that different schools teach climate different ways. I read an article that science teachers are having a hard time teaching about climate in high school. Teachers did not have the correct teaching about climate and have different opinions so it is hard for them to teach the subject. 

I also read on a article that 1 in 3 teachers in US public schools are teaching climate change denial. The findings suggest that climate change denial is being taught in a significant proportion of the nation's classrooms, and that many teachers who do try to address human-caused global warming don't have the time or resources to educate students properly about the science involved. Also in this article, I found that 30 percent of teachers are teaching students that climate change is 'likely due to natural causes.'

1. President Hoover underestimated the situation of Depression and thought that it would be over in 2 months. The blamed themselves because They blamed themselves but they would not because of the situation and did not want to ask for help.

2. I would of been very scared, confused, and wondering what to do and when it would end. I would think that the world would be ending. If I was a farmer, I would be worried about my crops and animals. 

3. The eastern part of the country was affected by the drought first, then it moved out to the Great Plains. It was caused by the drought and misuse. I agree because I think it helped lead to the great depression.

4. It ranks as the largest in US History. Because the were not welcomed, it made life hard.

Speech Review

I thought the speeches went overall well. This process helped me get over my fear of public speaking and showed me that it is easy, but you have to believe in yourself.

I thought that Forrest stood out from the ones that I saw. He was very pronounce and said his words very boldly and was engaged with the audience.

I learned that it is tough to look at your audience while you are giving your speech and I need to work on staying engaged with the audience.

Mini-Book Review

In the short story, Their Walk Home by Liddy Malone was a classic hit. The cute romantic date between Donna and Harry was quite interesting. The flirtatious couple spent the evening strolling through the town and listing to radio. With movies on the rise the two wanted to see a movie, but instead Harry settled for a kiss. In the end, they have decided to set a date for the movies. From the radio to the flirtatious kiss this book is a easy and good read.

In the short story, Betsy Learns about Women's Rights, by Avani Reddy was a hit about Women's Rights. This novel showed the importance of how women fought for Women's Rights and the ability to use birth control. But I must say this novel was a bit scattered, by jumping from one topic to another. In the end, I would recommend this novel because it is an easy read and quite interesting!

My Mini-Book

In my short story I had the topic Prohibition pretended that I was Blaze Butler and I was a bootlegger in the 1920's. I was rivals with the violent Al Capone and his crew. This short story includes 12 slang words from the 1920's.

1. I have heard of the propaganda but I am not sure what it means.

2. Definition of propaganda is information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.

4. What I noticed in all of the images is that they are trying to sell the navy and army to you. They made the posters very colorful to make it look fun and something that you would be interested in. They also made it sound like that you are needed for the navy or army and wanted to make you sound important. They also made it sound like a good opportunity.

Black Sox Scandal - Progressivism

From the newspaper archive, I found out about the Black Sox Scandal. I learned that on October 10, 1919, The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Chicago White Sox in game 8 of the World Series, making the Reds the 1919 Series champions. The White Sox were a powerhouse full of experience but the Reds were a young team. The series was full of “strange errors.” According to the "1919 World Series Being Investigated," (September 23, 1920) Rumors had spread that the Series had been fixed, and an investigation is begun into the allegations. Several White Sox players admitted to participation in the scandal, and eight of the players are indicted on charges of conspiracy to defraud the public. But according to "Eight White Sox Players Indicted: Later Suspended," (September 28, 1920) there was no evidence that it was true. On July 18, 1921, The players were brought to trial. On August 2, 1921, the jury found the players not guilty, but they were subsequently banned by the national baseball commissioner from playing professionally. This had a lot to do with the Progressivism as a movement. It made the government make decisions that would be better for our society as a whole. Everyone expects to see a fair game, just like you would expect your water to be purified in a water bottle. The government had to make an example that they would not take tolerance of cheating or gambling from players. This is how the Black Sox Scandal had to do with Progressivism.

Living Essay About Progressivism

I worked with Ben and Valeria today in class to tie our three topics together. Here is our Thesis and Conclusion: 

Thesis: 
One of the major aspects of the progressive era was how the government began to make regulations and laws to make a better quality of life. Going from something as big as to prohibition all the way to something as small as the radio the government provided safety and better expectations for all.

From the crimes created by gangs to the Black Sox Scandal to the inventions of radios, people wanted there to be a higher standards for society and for this to happen the government had to be involved by creating laws/regulations to insure that the standard was reached.  

Self Reflection

So far throughout the 2nd semester, US History has been tougher to me rather then the 1st Semester which was much easier. We are having to do a lot more thinking so far and I am not a fan of the harder reading questions. I do like watching videos and to reflect on the videos with the whole class like Eddie Aikau and the Skyline. The test has been much harder which has been a challenge. My goal is to do much better on the test and to study more for it.

The Future

1. In the Mental Floss article, they predicted that policeman would have x-ray vision. They also predicted that we would have flying machines by now. In the Open Culture article states that in the year 1964 people thought that in 50 years that we could have robots in existence and vehicles would have "robot brains." In the BBC article it talks about predictions that actually came true.

2. I think that the Mental Floss article was more about what will happen and in the BBC article was a wish list.

3. Some predictions that came true are the flying machine, pre-prepared food, mobile phones, and tanks.

4. In a lot of these lists, most of the predictions are revolved around space travel, while some predictions that are true resolve around the day to day life.

5. In my opinion, during the next 100 years, I see life in space, flying cars being created, and I also see cancer being cured. These are some things that I see happening in the next 100 years. 

6. I think we have almost most control over our future, because we are the inventors of new things. We have to do research and develop new things. But the government will have the control of what and what we can not invent.

The Legend of Eddie Aikau

I believe that the filmmakers called this film Hawaiian, The Legend of Eddie Aikau because they wanted to show people about his native culture and that nobody knows what truly happened to him. The angle was that Eddie Aikau was not only important to the surfing culture but also a huge aspect to the Hawaiian culture. Because ESPN made this documentary, it was mainly made around the surfing aspect because we can assume that the audience it more interested in the "big waves" other than the history part of it. But I also do believe ESPN wanted to show about the strong character that Eddie Aikau showed because sports are based around true character. If this film was made by PBS or the History channel the film would be based around the Hawaiian culture of surfing and Eddie Aikau.
