Baseball History

Throughout the research of my top the history of baseball, I have come to the conclusion that baseball gave people in their cities something to be proud of and be apart of. The game of baseball helped cities grow. It also brought in money for the city and other products. The game of baseball started something great in this time period and now is a multi-billion dollar industry.

I will now give you some information about baseball and how it started up. The first official game of baseball in the US took place in June 1846 in Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1869, the Cincinnati Red Stockings became America’s first professional baseball club. On February 2, 1876, the National league of Professional Baseball Clubs, which comes to be more commonly known as the National League was formed. The American League was formed in 1901 and in 1903, the first World Series was held.

With Cincinnati League-less, and a majority of its population unable to attend any games not played on a Sunday, the American Association was formed in 1881. Termed the “Beer and Whiskey” by National League detractors, four of its owners were in fact brewmasters. With franchises in St. Louis, Cincinnati, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, the AA had the advantage of a wider population base than the NL. But more significantly the AA scheduled games on Sunday’s, sold beer, and charged only 25 cents for admission which opened the specter of professional baseball to the working-class. St. Louis owner Christopher Von der Ahe, also known as “Millionaire Sportsman,” knew baseball’s ability to increase beer sales.

Money was a big problem for other leagues trying to start other leagues to compete against the National League and American Association. In 1884, the Union Association tried to form their own league. Many players left their teams for the freedom of the Union Association, but it only lasted one season because the teams lost too much money. In 1890, the Players League was formed, most of the best players from the American Association and National League joined, but like the Union Association, the Players League went bankrupt after one season. The competition and loss of players forced the American Association to fold, too, with four of its best teams joining the National League. The American League which started in 1901, raided most of the National League’s best players which caused The NL’s owners turned on each other. A court injunction impaneled a three-man commission to run the league, and they found a way for two-leagues to co-exist peacefully. In 1914, yet another league tried to gain a foothold. The Federal League sought to establish its presence both on the field and in the courtroom. They sued, contending that the American and National League constituted a monopoly. While the case languished in the legal system, the Federal League folded after two seasons.

Throughout the late 1890’s and early 1900’s baseball was the big talk among people throughout cities. Considered one of the greatest pitchers of all time, Cy Young, pitched in the Majors for the first time in 1890. The Boston Americans beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first World Series in 1903 which gave the people of Boston pride and confidence. Then in 1912 probably the greatest ballpark of all time, Fenway Park, opened which gave Boston another great thing to the city. Also during this time a legend was born in Boston, George “Babe” Ruth. Baseball is a betting man's game and the “dead ball” provided few home runs. The game relied on contact-hitters, bunters, and base-stealing. The adoption of a ball with cork center in 1911 changed the game forever which caused more exciting games.

The best thing about baseball is its past, because it is baseball is America's pastime. Everyone from the past is responsible for the grand game of baseball and how it is a billion dollar industry today. As you can see, baseball gave people in their cities something to be proud of and be apart of, helped cities grow, and it also brought in money for the city and other products.

What I Learned Today: Philanthropy

Today in class I learned about Philanthropy. Philanthropy is the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes. I learned that for your donations to be considered philanthropy you have to actually be giving it to promote the welfare of others and not yourself. It would not be considered philanthropy if you made a foundation in your name and you made profit from that foundation. This is what I learned today.

Savage Indians

Today I read about Native Americans in the textbook archive and learned about how Indians lived from being resourceful by, killing wild animals for food, clothes, and even equipment. The Indians were also very cruel. If they captured a prisoner they would torture them before they would kill them and the Indian with the most scalps was considered the bravest warrior. We looked up the definition of savage and it is someone who is uncivilized and barbarous and a fierce or cruel person.

"If you were an American student reading this text as part of your schoolwork, how would that shape the way you viewed Native Americans?"

If I were an American student reading this text as a part of my schoolwork, I would think that the Native Americans were very resourceful by the way of life, by killing wild animals for food, clothes, and equipment. I would also very impressed about how they build their houses out of material they find in the wild. I would also be very terrified of the Indians because of the way they torture prisoners, enjoy war, and believe that the most scalps a Indian has is considered the bravest warrior. I would have mixed emotions about Native Americans.

CW and HW of Indians Newspaper

In the Salt Lake Daily Herald newspaper I found out that a large group of Indians attacked a camping site where people lived. Salt Lake City in 1880 only had a population of 20,768. When the Indians attacked they only killed one person and eight horses. I found this article very interesting especially why would they attack these innocent people?


August 4, 1880

Dear Diary,

Today I thought I was going to die. A band of about 100 hostile Indians attacked our camp at 9 am. I started running with my kids and we got away. I ran up to the cliff and sat up there to see what was happening. The Indians attacked but were repulsed. Captain Gielle, with two companions showed up. A sharp engagement with troops and Indians took place which lasted 3 hours. Lieutenant Colladay was wounded, one solider and eight horses were killed. At 2 pm Captains Nolan's command arrived on scene and all of the Indians fled. They lost the Indians and could not find them. But at least only one human fatality occurred and that my family is okay.

Deep Thinking

Our use of social media for news is selective and intentional so that we may tend to remain interested in things that we are already interested in. On the other hand professional news outlets like newspapers expose readers to information on a broad range of topics this helps me to see what other people think is important.

Newspaper Exhibits

           A newspaper is a publication issued at regular and usually close intervals, especially daily or weekly, and commonly containing news, comment, features,and advertising. The first newspaper was printed in 1641 in England. The first successful daily newspaper in Britain was not printed until 1702. The Boston The Hartford Courant was published On October 29, 1774 and is known as the oldest newspaper in the United States. In the New York Times the leading story is Obama to Announce Halt of U.S. Troop Withdrawal in Afghanistan. A newspaper of record is a major newspaper that has a large circulation and whose editorial and news-gathering functions are considered professional and typically authoritative. In 1913, The New York Times was the "newspaper of record" because it became the first U.S. newspaper to publish an index of the subjects covered in its pages. Looking at a Newspaper is more efficient then just by using social media to stay connected, because on a newspaper, everything you need to know is all in the paper and not spread out in social media. 

First Quarter Reflections

           I have learned very much in US History the first quarter. I have become a better researcher as well as a becoming a better critical thinker. I have also learned many tech skill that I have not known how to. Lastly, I learned the difference between sympathy and empathy. These skills help me inside the classroom of US History but it also helps outside the classroom.

            I hope to grow as a US history student by, being able to read a history textbook better and be better at comprehending material that you read. I hope to watch another movie about slavery and have class discussions about the movie. I also would like to do research on a movie and write an essay on it. This is what I hope to do in the second quarter of the school year.

MLB American Indians

I learned today there are three active American Indian Major League baseball players. The three baseball players are, Jacoby Ellsbury (32), Joba Chamberlain (30), and Kyle Lohse. Jacoby (36) is part of the Navajo tribe, Joba is part of the Winnebago tribe, and Kyle is part of the Nomlaki Wintun tribe. Both Joba and Jacoby have been in the Major Leagues since 2007 and Kyle has been in the Major's since 2001. Throughout the many years of Major League baseball there has only been 49 American Indian baseball players.

Carson Hall - Film Essay

I have moved away from Randolph and have had to go to a different school. My new US History teacher does not think I can improve my thinking skills or learn anything of value from watching movies. But I a, going to prove her wrong by showing that it is possible to develop great analytical skills and explore real events, circumstances, attitudes by watching movies in a critical way, and doing some research.

Being an analytical thinker means, to be able to break down something and being able to look at it in a different way. By watching the movie Glory, I was able to analyze the movie and do some research to come to the conclusion that, it is one of the most historically accurate and the most moving movie ever made about the war. I thought that in the movie 12 Years a Slave, that it was extraordinary and daring to make a movie about a man who was free but is kidnapped into slavery. I have never seen nor heard a movie about this kind of format until we watched it in class. According to Steven Rea from Philadelphia Inquirer, “the subject of slavery, from the perspective of the enslaved, has never really been addressed on-screen before. McQueen, the black British director, remedies this failing fearlessly.” Being a filmmaker who wants to depict historical events in a way that will still draw a paying audience into the theater, and having to condense events that took years to occur in a two-hour timeframe is a challenge. Even though it may be a challenge, if the filmmakers care about their reason to make the movie and get it out to the public, then it should not be impossible. Just like in the movie 12 Years a Slave the filmmaker McQueen said, “This film for me is about love,” and also referring to the movie as “discussion about human dignity...It’s a fight for soul, it’s a war for his spirit.” He wanted to make a movie of a type that has never really been made before so that we, the free people can empathize with it because we can imagine being free like we are but horrifyingly being kidnapped and becoming a slave. Because of McQueen’s passion for 12 Years a Slave it should not be impossible to condense events that took years to occur into a two-hour time frame. Films can convey “truths” about history, or can provide inspiration, or even insight specific historical facts are changed. The movie Glory conveyed ‘truths” about history. All of the most important events in the film happened just as they are shown, like the outcome of Zwick, and the key characters did exist. However sometimes like in the movie 12 Years a Slave some things are not as accurate as they seem. According to History vs. Hollywood, “The real Edwin Epps was crueler than the actor…” Edwin was a very cruel man in the movie, if they did portray him as he really was than it would be much harder for viewers to keep watching. They needed to do what is best for the viewers. Also, according to History vs. Hollywood, “Patsy never did beg Solomon to take her life.” I believe they added this to add drama and interested to show how much pain Patsy had gone through. Sometimes, filmmakers will add things that may not have actually occurred in history just to add some drama and show how the character is feeling.

In conclusion, I am analytical in my thinking and can develop an argument and use evidence to support it. I can also show challenges that a filmmaker may face and understand how a film can convey “truths” about history, or insight specific historical facts that are changed. As you can see, it is possible to develop great analytical skills and explore real events, circumstances, and attitudes just by watching movies in a critical way, and doing some research.

Practice Incorporating a Quotation

Glory is a movie about war and death. As one film critic says in an article "It is through defeat and death in the regiment that the nation experiences a new birth of freedom."  This quote shows that even though the men are not coming home to their families they have won for the freedom of other family and our country.


Today I have learned how to paraphrase and quote. Paraphrasing is a very important key 
 to US History because you need to know how to say what an article means without using 
the exact words and plagiarizing. I need to use quoting when a quote is important and must give credit to the author. These two things will help me be a better history student.

This is what Mrs. Lawson wanted me to learn today:

• Only use a quote when it adds power and style to my writing.
• Always make it clear, from context, that I understand the full meaning of the quote.
• Whether I quote or paraphrase, always be transparent about the source and how I'm using it.
• If I use another author's exact words or phrases, to any extent, I have to use quotation marks to give credit.
• If I use another's author's presentation of facts or ideas, but put their ideas in my own words, I better have a good reason for doing that, and I must give credit.
• Hyperlinking is so easy, there is no excuse for not being transparent about my sources. 

         I understand how to do this.

Paraphrase

This is from an article on the Civil War movie "Glory", "The decision to end the movie with the failed assault at Wagner solidifies this progressive theme, which links the men to one another and, supposedly, the goal of the United States by the middle of the war. The final scenes depict the grim reality of the battlefield, including shoe-less dead black soldiers, and a mass grave in which both Shaw and his men are buried. As the movie ends the viewer is told that the performance of the 54th Massachusetts led to the recruitment of upwards of 180,000 men and that President Lincoln credited these men with turning the tide of war."

In other words, the when the failed assault at Wagner made all of the soldiers stronger and come together as a unit. They all had one goal and that was to win the battle for the United States of America. Throughout the final scenes, it showed accurate and grossing images of the reality of the war, and a huge grave which Shaw and all of his men were all buried together which showed a bond even in death between the men. Because of the brave men heroic acts and performance in the 54th Massachusetts led to 180,000 more men joining the war and President Lincoln honored the men for changing the war for the best.

Sympathy vs. Empathy

     I learned that sympathy and empathy differ very much from each other. Sympathy is feeling sorry or pity of someone's misfortune and empathy is to be able to understand how someone feels or that you have been in their situation before. An example of empathy is slavery, even know we have not been in their situation of being a slave, we can imagine and use your mind to put yourself in their shoes. I can also sympathize because I feel bad for slaves and what they had to go through. Empathy plays a big party in studying history, because it helps you understand better of what decisions people made and what people had to go through. Therefore, empathy and sympathy are two keys aspects in studying history.
